I have always been anti-pet for us. I am SOOOO not an animal person. Which is why it is totally crazy that we now have a kitten.
Let me back up a bit.
Mom & Dad were having a garage sale and we went to help out the night before. Before Brad came over, he found a little kitten under his porch and ended up bringing it over with him.
Kate LOVED him! She held him in a towel, kissed him, pet him... but, she never asked if we could keep him. That was the very last thing on my mind anyway. In fact, Brad put a picture on facebook asking if someone wanted the cat.
The next day at the garage sale, we literally had to take names because so many people wanted the cat and we were waiting to see if the first person could actually take him.
Meanwhile, Kate got more and more attached. At some point in the day, she became SO sad about the thought of someone else taking the cat.
She cried and cried and cried some more. She would bury her head in the kitten and quietly cry. She was seriously heart broken.
Still, though, I was anti-pet. No way. Too much work, they cost money, they shed, Mark is allergic... all the reasons I always stood behind before.
I texted Mark and told him about Kate and the kitten. He texted back something like, "Why don't we just let her keep it?" Uhhhh, say what??? No thanks.
Somewhere between that (Mark was sold on the cat) and everyone telling me how thrilled she would be, how easy cats are to take care of, and how it's a great thing for a kid to have a pet, I caved.
It wasn't quite magical when we told her she could keep him. She had a major meltdown and later told me it was because she just loved him so much. Honestly, though, I think she was overwhelmed. Everyone was standing around waiting to see her reaction and it was probably just too much for her.
She eventually came around, and kept saying, "I can't believe I have a kitten."
His name is Jonah. Jonah Bieber.
The kids LOVE that little thing. Poor kitty. Jack needs LOTS of direction with the kitten. He would swing that thing around over his head if we let him. He's sooo crazy with this thing. For some reason, Jonah loves him, though.
He really is cute. Kate has been very responsible with him, even cleaning the litter box.
Someone posted on my facebook, "What? Jennifer Roskowske actually has a litter box in her house?" That pretty much sums it up. This is a HUGE leap for me. So far, so good, though.
